Henrik Ibsen (March 20, 1828–May 23, 1906) was a Norwegian playwright. Known as “the father of realism,” he is most notable for plays questioning the social mores of the time and featuring complex, yet assertive female characters. Before Ibsen, drama was in verse, not accurate speech of the people. It was for entertainment and appealed to the imagination. Drama had intricate plots and was filled with coincidences and soliloquies. Realistic prose drama - depicts life accurately and realistically. It uses realistic dialogue, incomplete sentences and interruptions.
